Coinbase Commerce is a hosted cryptocurrency payment gateway operated by Coinbase, the largest US-based cryptocurrency exchange. It allows merchants to accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins, and other cryptocurrencies with a simple 1% transaction fee and no setup or monthly costs.
How Coinbase Commerce Works
Coinbase Commerce provides a hosted checkout experience. Merchants create a charge, and customers pay directly from their wallet. The platform supports multiple blockchain networks including Ethereum, Base, Polygon, and Solana, enabling low-cost stablecoin payments. Funds settle into the merchant’s Coinbase Commerce wallet, which can be withdrawn to a bank account or external wallet.
Important Transition Notice
Coinbase Commerce is being unified with Coinbase Business. Existing merchants must transition by March 31, 2026, after which the Commerce portal will become inaccessible. Coinbase Business is currently available to US and Singapore-based businesses, with expansion to additional countries planned throughout 2026.
Key Features
- 1% transaction fee: One of the lowest rates among hosted crypto payment processors
- No setup costs: Free account creation with no monthly subscription fees
- Multi-network support: Accept payments on Ethereum, Base, Polygon, and Solana for lower fees
- Stablecoin-first: Built-in support for USDC, USDT, and DAI with instant settlement
- Payment links: Create shareable payment links for invoices and donations
- Hosted checkout: Embeddable payment buttons and hosted checkout pages
- API access: Full API for custom integrations and automation
Fee Structure
Coinbase Commerce charges a flat 1% fee per transaction, deducted automatically from the settlement amount. There are no setup fees, monthly fees, or withdrawal fees from the Commerce dashboard. For example, if a customer pays $100 in USDC, the merchant receives $99 (minus the 1% fee).
Note: If converting to fiat, additional Coinbase exchange conversion fees may apply (typically 0.5–1.5%). Network fees are paid by the customer at the time of payment.
Supported Cryptocurrencies
Coinbase Commerce supports approximately 10 cryptocurrencies across multiple networks, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin, Solana, and major stablecoins (USDC, USDT, DAI). Base network support is particularly notable for USDC payments, which settle in seconds with minimal fees.
Best For
Coinbase Commerce is best for small to medium businesses, especially those already using Shopify or WooCommerce, who want a simple, low-cost hosted solution with minimal technical setup. The 1% fee and 15-minute setup make it one of the most accessible options for adding crypto payments alongside existing payment processors.
Important Considerations
- Geographic restrictions: Coinbase Business (the replacement) is currently only available for US and Singapore-based businesses
- Transition deadline: March 31, 2026 migration deadline for existing Commerce merchants
- KYC required: Full identity verification and business documentation required
- Custodial: Funds are held in Coinbase-hosted wallets until withdrawal
- Limited altcoin support: Supports fewer cryptocurrencies than some competitors
